Days 10-14

Something uniquely wonderful about living in Colorado

is looking out of the window some mornings and seeing a hot air balloon

lifting off from a field not too far away.

Like a hot air balloon,

I've been in the process of slowly ascending by releasing ballast,

those weights than hinder upward progress.

Physically, I've lost about 20 pounds since January.

Hurray!

I'm dreaming of dressing this soon-to-be 40 year old body

in all of the vintage treasures too-long stored away in my closet.

I'll post many more photos of the After.

Starting this year,

'cause 40 is the start of a new adventure in oh so many ways,

I will...

Dance more often.

I love to dance.

Disco, salsa, merengue, goofball moves in my kitchen with my Ipod.

Don't get me started about the joys of Just Dance for the Wii.

Be delighted.

There are so many things in the course of the every day that are delightful.

Giggling. The sweetness of an orange. A scented candle.

Breathing in and out.

Risk.

Share my heart. Try. Look deeper.

Face instead of turning away.

Really feel the emotions.

Love.

Freely. Wholeheartedly. Extravagantly.

Basking in the way He loves me so very, very much.

Receive love.

Day 3

I like numbers and patterns. Never had a favorite color but like color combinations. And I enjoy recalling significant moments:

Age 0 - I was born in a bright pink hospital on top of a hill in Hawaii. If that isn't an auspicious start, I don't know what is!

Age 10 - Rode my 1st roller coaster with my dad and received several significant books from a family friend, including Mandy by Julie (Andrews) Edwards. This story of a 10 year old orphan longing for a place of her own resonated with my heart and gave me a sense of calling in life.

Age 20 - I committed my life to God. Numerous tragedies had taken place leading up to this year, but He picked me up out of the mess, cleaned me up, and reminded me of His love and purpose.

Age 30 - Just had my 1st baby and shaved my head bald. The two events are very loosely related, story for another post.

Age 40 - A new beginning, feeling the most comfortable in my skin. Lots of adventure, "can't" has been erased from my vocabulary.

Age 50 - The fabulousness continues. Watch out world! Reinvention, the fulfillment of grander dreams. Left my mark in Paris, Venice, and London.

Age 60 - Dress totally inappropriately for my age, but since 60 is the new 40, I'm reliving my peak all over again. Wear too many rings at one time, just like my Mama did. And what's with the bright lipstick and big hair???

Age 70 - I've always wanted to be an eccentric. Another dream realized. Still love loud polyester pants but enjoy throwing Chanel into the mix too. Have to get more pages for the passport.

Age 80 - No plastic surgery, thank God for great genes and an Asian mother. Decide to take up the Tango, a dance I've not mastered yet. May compete in an Amateur Ballroom Contest - love wearing the dresses. Still look great in them.

Age 90 - Climbing mountains, maybe literally, definitely figuratively.

Age 100 - It's been a Beautiful Century (the meaning of my name). It's up to God if He wants me here or there. I'm willing either way. My intention is as this poem describes:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave

with the intention of arriving safely

in an attractive and well preserved body,

But rather to skid into Heaven sideways,

chocolate in one hand,

champagne in the other,

body thoroughly used up,

totally worn out and screaming

"WOO HOO what a ride!"

Thoughts and Dreams

Day 2

Oprah sharing a conversation: "And as I sat there crying, he (Sidney Poitier) said, 'You have to remember you are carrying people's dreams, and when you are carrying people's dreams, oftentimes they put burdens on you that are not yours to bear. You have to decide what your dream is for yourself.'"

That statement hits home - so many things happened last year, including the passing of my mother. 39 was rough. But those challenges have also served as a catalyst for a deeper examination of myself.

The last decade was spent moving around, re-creating a home multiple times, for the dreams of a spouse. Staying at home with the children and homeschooling. Serving my church and community in a number of areas. And I've done it all gladly. No complaints...well, except for the moving around (a woman can pack and unpack boxes only so many times before going completely mad.)

Prior to getting married, I worked with an international humanitarian organization and lived in Ethiopia for a year. I also spent a few months traveling around Bulgaria for that organization. It was life-changing and exciting. One dream fulfilled.

At that time, I condensed my life into two suitcases, sold my car and gave away prized possessions (including my favorite pair of orange, red and black polyester bellbottom pants.) Disposed of anything that didn't fit into my new responsibilities as a representative of God and the organization overseas.

And I've used that same approach ever since. Though I haven't "lacked in personality" the last 10 years, I want to play the role of ME more too. I am no longer apologetic for loving psychedelic polyester bellbottom pants and plan to wear them more often. (I've picked up a pair here and there.)

The dreams of my heart that I will embrace as a 40 year old aka what will make me look more like me...

Drawing. I stopped when I had babies because of the time and messiness.

Piercing my nose (and I'm gonna do it too in 39 days!) When I was little, no one looked like me because I am a blend of two distinctive, culturally different parents. The first time I saw a picture of woman in a sari, I screamed, "There's my people!" I had never seen someone that looked like me until then. Inside, I am an Indian-Pakistani princess mixed with Diana Ross and her hair.

Writing a book. I've had the idea for a biographical compilation for a few years now and have started conversations with several individuals. Stories about people's lives are fascinating to me.

Collecting vintage gowns and using them in my photography. My love of costumes and dresses began when I was around 3, with an aunt who used to make me hundreds of intricate paper dolls with hats, purses and fancy dresses.

Other passions and intentions...going to Paris, running a race, establishing a tea shop/photography studio/eclectic treasures shop, swimming again in the freezing cold beaches in Maine, dancing, studying design, renovating homes, poking about the whole country, taking my kids to Ethiopia, doing a photo shoot in both a bikini and my red satin gown.

What are your dreams and passions? Though every day may not be a party, how do you celebrate life?

40 Until 40

I'm counting down the 40 days until I turn 40,

and today is day one.

I've eagerly anticipated turning 40 for as long as I can remember.

Ever since I was a child,

my heroines have always been elegant and sophisticated

with a decided air about them.

Women who knew their minds,

were decisive and sure.

I admired their confidence.

I think a woman just starts being

truly beautiful at 40.

She's set in who she is,

no longer experimenting or trying to please everyone else.

I love the delicate lines that appear on the face,

the more hollow neck and collar bone areas.

The graceful hands.

Eyes that sparkle with wisdom and knowledge.

All of the ladies I've looked up to have increased in loveliness after age 40.

My mom.

Benazir Bhutto, one of the ladies I most admire in the world.

Audrey Hepburn

(more beautiful as she worked with UNICEP than in her younger years, to me.)

Elizabeth Dole. Sophia Loren. Jane Fonda. Oprah Winfrey.

And many ladies over 40 who are not famous but are so very lovely to me!

I am prepared for whatever comes my way.

A bird gets caught in my hair?

No problem.

Use one arm to shield the face

and the other to grab the bird's legs to remove it.

If I ever fall through a floor,

I need to spread my arms wide,

put my palms down and push up.

Don't kick my legs.

For a guest who overstays their welcome,

declare a household emergency

(like asbestos or mold removal)

or decide to paint that room and remove all the furniture.

Don't say "I'm going on vacation" as the guest may offer to housesit.

Advice I found to be invaluable:

I think it'd work if I'm walking into my kids' school too.

But the #1 solution (as I approach my 40th birthday):

If you're going gray,

get the hippest, most avant-garde hair cut.

Take on an air of sophistication by wearing fashionable black ensembles

with dark capes, dark-rimmed glasses,

and laugh vigorously while drinking elegant flutes of wine in public.

I recently chopped of my hair and colored it red.
Gotta go get some capes and glasses, hmmm.

Starting Saturday, I'm going to be celebrating:

There's something wonderfully decadent about getting two pairs of new shoes. Especially when they're both 75% off!

Yes, you are seeing correctly...the boots are size 11. Sigh.

These boots make me feel elegant.

And raspberry is my favorite pink.

I adore the whimsical rosette and ruched detail.

This blessing of new footwear helps me go forth into the new year

with added confidence and style.

Valentine's Mantel Linky Party

Beth of The Stories of A2Z is hosting a Valentine's Mantel Party!!! My daughter's Alice In The Wonderland birthday party was this weekend, and I transitioned many of the decorations to Valentine's Day (totally had it planned to have the decorations multi-task...just like Mama!)

Though I don't have a fireplace mantel, I use this narrow table in front of a window for the purpose of displaying pretty vignettes. My Coffee Filter-Doily Wreath is dressed up for the occasion with sequin hearts that I was inspired to make here from Kathleen at Grosgrain.

The large rose tree and fluffy iridescent white trees were created from rolled up poster board wrapped with tinsel garlands (Christmas mega clearance.) I may be obsessed with cone trees...

This sweet bird is perched in a cupcake liner nest embellished with more tinsel garland and a sequin heart. Such a cutie!

Red and white crepe paper roses...off with their heads!!! (The cards had to paint the white roses red for the Queen of Hearts.) They're so versatile and realisitic and would look amazing in bouquets of every color!

A Hobby Lobby steal for a little over a dollar! I bought this pink tree to dress up my daughter's room next Christmas but couldn't resist using it for her birthday party and Valentine's. Along with a butterfly and dragonfly, it holds a sparkly boot, birds, and heart ornaments filled with ribbons. I adore splashes of color!

Mix cupcake liner flowers, feathers, pearls and a sequin heart for this arrangement - perfect!

No Red Today = Grumpy

After three days of bright and beautiful lips, I fell off the (red) wagon and decided to not put forth the effort today. And I was grumpy.

I didn't put forth effort for myself today. And at the end of the day, I felt frustrated and put out and yucky.

So the moral of the story and the reason for the red is...to take time for myself first thing, make the effort to feel prepared for the day, even a bit glamorous so that the day is off to a better start. That's the outside - spending time with God in prayer and reading the Bible gets the inside ready...and I must make that a priority too, daily.

Using Red to Combat the Blues

This year has started off kind of rough for me.

After wallowing for a few days,

I kicked myself in the pants and decided to fight the blues.

With some red.

Red lipstick, or some shade/variation of it,
every day for a few weeks to see how it impacts my life.

See, the thing with red is that it's a bold, in-your-face color.

Especially on your lips.

It's an "I am woman, hear me roar" kind of statement.

Elegant, but fierce.

And I need some of that fierceness right now,

to help combat the rising tide of blues that overwhelm me at times.

I'll take fiery passion and attitude over shrinking violet any day.

And part of that stance involves looking the part.

Hence the Red.

My Boys' Birthday Parties

My sons share a birthday, though they are five years apart.

Barnabas turned 8

Unknown to me at the time,

my older son had prayed that his brother would be born on his birthday,

and my labor kicked in right after midnight on December 29th.

Seriously!

Keizo turned 3

Because it's right after Christmas,

I make a special effort to separate the holiday from the birthdays.

The boys have ~~an obsession~~ a love of football,

so the theme of this year's birthday celebration was:

"Brothers United In Their Love Of The Game."

I decorated with the colors from The Colts and Giants,

who happen to have quarterbacks who are also brothers!

One of the most inexpensive ways to make a huge impact

and fill up a room with decor is with paper streamers.

The ceiling was covered with blue and white twisted loops and multiple pennants -

some bought from the store and some homemade.

An apothecary jar filled with footballs.

And a football to serve napkins.

Football cakes for the birthday boys!

Keizo had a preschool party in the morning,

and Barnabas went swimming at the Recreation Center with his friends

in the afternoon before coming back to the house for an evening tailgate party:

homemade chili, nachos with cheese, chicken nuggets, hotdogs.

We capped the evening off with competitive dancing

via Just Dance 2 for the Wii.

Our new family obsession!!!

Handmade Cone Trees

Cone trees may be my new obsession.

I just wanna keep making them, and it's not just me.

These fabric covered cones from The Exchange are amazing!!!

They're next on my To Do list.

So, the other night I was feeling rather hum drum.

My son was about to toss some empty cereal boxes into the recycling bin,

and an idea clicked.

They were the right weight to make sturdy cone trees!

After opening each box to lay flat, I cut off the tabbed ends.

I rolled up each sheet of cardboard,

taping the seam once I formed a point at one end.

Then I cut along the bottom edge to make it stand up straight.

(Eyeballing it is less precise and may require several trims until the cone lays straight.)

Now to the fun part...

For this teal and brown tree, I took two coordinating ribbons

and alternated laying the diagonal stripes from top to bottom.

As the tree was being covered,

the stripes began to shift to a more horizontal direction,

eventually criss-crossing over.

I simply followed the direction of the stripes until the last finishing strip.

The trees below are wrapped in twine.

I adore both the sparkly, colorful designs of the holiday season

as well as the muted, natural looks.

I want both represented in my Christmas decor,

and these trees are a wonderfully textured and rustic element.

Large trees, small trees,

trees covered in fabric and trim.

Glittered trees, rustic trees.

More and more trees, please!

Presenting my pièce de résistance of the 2010 Holiday Season...

the Triple Layer Coffee Filter and Paper Doily Wreath!

It all started with the purchase of the wrong size coffee filters.

Desperate for my morning cup, I used one of the too small filters anyway

and was rewarded with a gritty cup o' joe. Nice (well, not so much.)

Between Martha Stewart and numerous bloggy inspirations,

I decided a wreath was in order.

I used a wire wreath form (with three circles) lurking in my craft supply

(had attempted to make a chandelier for my daughter's room - disaster.)

Starting with the innermost circle:

I twisted the small brown filters into a flower shape,

pulled the (not fluffy) ends through the wire,

looped and hot glued them into place all around the form.

The second row consists of larger white coffee filters,

twisted into a flower shape, pulled through the wire form and glued into place.

The wreath was fairly full at this point,

and the outermost wire circle couldn't be seen but I felt it was incomplete.

Another row of white filters didn't seem quite right,

so I opted to use medium-sized paper doilies from the Dollar Tree

using the same technique but even more gently.

Perfect!

A loop from gold Christmas ribbon through the wire form,

white lights poked into the back of the filter flowers,

and displayed on a wreath hanger in my front window.

I am thrilled with the results!

Advent Stockings

I've been looking for the right Advent Calendar for our family for several years...the wood ones with boxes were adorable and colorful, but the small compartments were too limiting. There are many wonderfully creative projects out there (like using small metal buckets, chinese take-out cartons, decorated paper bags, etc.), but none of them clicked for me. Then I saw this idea in the Ballard's catalog and thought, "A-ha! I can do this!!!" (And my version costs a lot less than the $99.00 price tag on theirs. Fleece on clearance, thread, glue, paper, clothespins and twine.)

Wanting a non-traditional color scheme,

I used blue, brown, green and pink fleece (that I had on hand)

and added the cream fleece for a 5th color.

Michaels had a mini stocking with curled toes that I used as a template,

simply tracing around it onto the fleece and cutting out 5 of each color.

The fleece was so fluffy that it kept snagging on my sewing machine.

After numerous extremely frustrating attempts,

I abandoned the machine and decided to hand stitch them.

The blanket stitch and whip stitch were attractive options but too time-consuming.

In the end, I decided that a simple straight one worked best

for the playful look of the stockings.

Next, I cut out 2 inch strips of the fleece for the stocking cuffs.

Some were left straight with a rolled cuff,

while others were given a rounded edge.

The cuffs were wrapped around the top of each stocking and hot glued in place.

My intention is to add permanent felt numbers to the stockings (when I find the right ones),

but for now I made paper numbers printed onto a background I created myself.

Instead of hanging the stockings on fabric like the inspirational Ballard piece,

I am going to make a garland out of twine, clipping the stockings on with clothespin.

That gives me more flexibility on where I can display this advent calendar.

The size of the stockings also allows for more variety with the items I place in them.

Scrolls with Scripture printed on them.

Treats mixed in with messages of love for each child.

Fun activities to do as a family and with others.

Even pieces of the Little People nativity spread out across the days,

so that by Christmas Eve the scene is complete.

My hope is that this becomes a family heirloom and tradition

that helps create years of wonderful memories!

Christmas Decor Projects, Part I

A few Christmas decor projects...

I finally got around to making a garland of my own

(they've only been floating around the blogosphere like forever),

so I combined my ~~obsession~~ fondness for the 12 Days of Christmas with twine

and hung this across my bookshelves.

I scored these crackers at my mother-in-law's house last year

when I saw them lying around unopened.

After eyeballing them with envy for a few days,

I finally asked her casually what her plans were for them.

A gift from an acquaintance, was I interested in them?

Um...YES! HELLO?!?

I eagerly popped open each cracker,

filling the room with the scent of smoke...no worries,

and tenderly embraced each of the symbols.

Aren't they gorgeous?

Do you remember these thrift store finds?

I found some miniature cakes in the dollhouse furniture section at Hobby Lobby

and attached them to the top of two of the glass bells.

Since they'll be used all year,

I wanted something whimsical vs. Christmasy.

The objects inside will be swapped out, of course.

This last bell has a simple white ball glued to its dome,

to balance out the personality of the other two.

This final project was inspired by one featured on

Dollar Store Crafts.

Buy a large vase, glass candlestick and small bowls (they come in a set of three)

from the Dollar Store.

The small bowl fits the opening of the vase.

If it wiggles around a bit (like mine did),

then apply a thin strip of hot glue to the rim and let it harden completely.

That'll make the fit better.

I attached a glass handle that I had leftover from another projects,

but the original project featured glass knobs from Walmart.

Glue the vase onto a candlestick.

Voila!

A lovely, tall, inexpensive apothecary jar!

I Went Black

Yes, indeed.

I crossed over to the Dark Side this morning in my quest to fulfill my little girl's long-held desire for a collection of Disney Princesses. And it was fun!

Up by 2:15 a.m. to peruse the ads one last time and get dressed in layers, I called my shopping buddy and headed out. Traffic was light. A good sign. The parking lot was mostly empty, and I didn't see a line. Could it be? Then I saw the row of shopping carts creating a line barrier. And I saw the people. Time to hustle and stake out my place in line. 2:45 a.m.

Two ladies covered in blankets on camp chairs and a single gal bundled up were in front of me, while two Euro dudes lightly dressed (and by lightly, I mean one of them was wearing shorts) took their place behind me. The wait began.

My friend pulled up a few minutes later, but there were already 10-15 people behind me in line. I couldn't let her join me in fear of a riot but was also unwilling to lose my place in line to get at the back of it with her. So I sent her to Kohl's, which was just opening at 3:00 a.m. since there wasn't anything in particular that she was after from Target anyway. Instead of heading there right away, my generous pal stopped by Starbucks and brought me a Venti Latte. Generous, I tell you.

I pegged the ladies in the camp chairs as pros and pumped them for information. They shared strategies and their experience. A gentleman in front of them counted the number of people ahead of us in line: 103. I hoped that none of them wanted Disney Princesses. Security passed out store maps, and a news cameraman appeared. The parking lot started to fill as more and more people joined the line that now snaked around the side of the building. Did I mention that this was a SuperTarget? A humongous building.

During the final minutes before the doors opened, a curious wall of people formed by the entrance - why weren't they joining the line? Either they were going to try to merge into the crowd heading in or were reluctant to walk all the way behind the building to the end of the line. Target security was on the ball and monitored that crowd diligently. No line cutters!

The adrenaline rush and excitement tinged with a bit of anxiety grew as the doors opened. Would there be enough? Was it going to be madness inside of the store? Did everyone want the same thing I did??? I walked to the Toy section, rounded the corner and saw my prize on the shelf. No one else was there! Seriously, tears sprang to my eyes as I took hold of a box. My daughter had been doing extra chores and saving her money for months to buy the dolls, and Target was offering them for 30% off. I could imagine her excitement and appreciation on Christmas morning - all of her hard work had paid off in a different way.

Next I headed to the Men's section to look for the plush robe my husband wanted that was being offered for 50% off. Again, no one else was in that section, and I took my time deciding on a color. The two items that I'd come for were in my possession. I was thankful. And relieved.

The store was super crowded as I made my way to the registers, but people were pleasant and patient. Though I'm certain this wasn't the scene at every store, my first experience as a Black Friday early morning bargain hunter was great! The store employees were cheerful, helpful and the store organized. The camaraderie with the people in line, the thrill of the hunt, and the reward of a bargain price on a Christmas prize...I'd do it again if there was an item I wanted to purchase. I can assure you, however, that I won't be camping out with my tent just to be first in line - there was a woman who'd been there since noon on Thanksgiving day. She's outta my league as far as being a dedicated bargain hunter.

Overall, I'm feeling extremely blessed that I was able to get the dolls and robe for such great prices as well as a few other items for my family at other stores we visited after Target. We were finished with our shopping just as the sun was going up over the mountains. It was time for bed!

Look what I found on a walk recently!

A gorgeous branch filled with orange leaves begging for me to take it home!

I placed it in a moss-filled, burlap-net covered vase ( inspired by Pottery Barn)

and arranged it with my ceramic pumpkins. So happy!

My Christmas Wreath & Ribbon Flowers

My Christmas Wreath!

Total cost = $3.25

I picked up a large embroidery hoop from a thrift store, then wrapped it with an evergreen garland from the Dollar Store. On top of the green is a roll of a wooden trellis-type "ribbon" from Michaels that's been hanging around my craft supplies just waiting for the right project, followed by 25 cent ribbon from Hancock Fabrics that's looped around the wreath and made into a rose. Isn't she lovely?

I kinda got addicted to making more flowers out of wired ribbon.

Directions:

Gently pull out the wire from one edge and gather the ribbon,

then roll up the ribbon on the gathered side to make the flower.

I dabbed hot glue as I rolled the ribbon in order to secure it along the way.

A loose ruffled edge makes a rose,

while a more tightly gathered one makes a carnation.

This last one wasn't wired but was a lovely two toned ribbon from Martha Stewart's line.

I made two small rosettes and stacked them up on top of each other...

thinking of turning them into cocktail rings!

My Decorated Candy Tins

In my previous post, I shared a perfect idea for a delightful but inexpensive Christmas gift for teachers or a stocking stuffer. Tragically, I was unable to join the crafting fun that day... But my dear friend who shared this idea with me hosted another gift making day, so I had the opportunity to make my own Decorated Candy Tins! I also wanted to make sure I linked back to the original blog post where this idea was featured: My Paper Creations by Niki Estes. (I'm sorry, Niki, for not giving you credit previously - I didn't know that this idea was from your site but corrected it when I found out the source.)

To review, here are the supplies you'll need to make these tins:

Rectangle Clear Top Tins (.875"H x 5.5"W x 3.7")
Hershey's Nuggets (one bag fills three tins)
Decorative Paper (we used 12x12 scrapbook paper)
Ribbon, Stamps, Cut Outs, Shape Punches, etc.
Adhesive

Instructions:

1. To wrap the tin, you'll need to cut the strips of paper 4x12.
2. To wrap the nuggets, you'll need to cut the strips of paper 1x3
3. After you wrap the candy and the tin, then embellish the outside with ribbon, stamps, cut outs, shape punches, etc. We embossed our stamped labels, making them sparkly.

Finding a creative pal in Colorado has been a huge blessing.
After a long-distance move,
you wonder, you hope...
you desperately want to connect with someone who has similar interests.
Soon after meeting at church, Lilah and I discovered that we enjoy making things
and have gotten together several times to Create.
Unfortunately, I missed the latest gathering (drat!)
because I was teaching a Photography Workshop but wanted to showcase
this ~~clever~~, ~~adorable~~, ~~wonderfully creative~~, PERFECT gift
for a teacher or as a stocking stuffer.

Supplies:

Rectangle Clear Top Tins (.875" H x 5.5" W x 3.7")***

Hershey's Nugget Chocolates (one bag fills three tins)

Decorative Paper

Ribbon, Stamps, Border Punches, Cut Outs, etc.

Adhesive

Here's Lilah...

1. Decide what yummy ribbon and paper you are going to use

2. Cut a 4x12 inch strip of paper to wrap around the tin itself...use a border punch on the edges.

3. Cut 12 - 1x3 inch strips to wrap around the nuggets

4. Adhere all your papers with adhesive. The nuggets first, then wrap the tin itself.

5. Embellish as you wish with ribbon, a Christmas stamp, or various cut outs.

6. Give to your children's teachers, neighbors...or keep them for your self because they are too cute to give away!

***Lilah purchased her tins online at Papertrey Ink for $2.00/tin, and I also found other sources that offered them for a great price including Specialty Bottle for about $1.00/tin. I haven't ordered from them yet, so I don't know anything about their level of customer service. When shopping around, look for a tin that is (.875" H x 5.5" W x 3.7").

I cannot believe that tomorrow is the day of the Project Runway Finale and Party!!! I featured the Mondo-inspired outfit that I'm going to be wearing here, and I've also been busy creating my own "Piperlime.com accessory wall" and putting together a "L'Oreal/Garnier Fructis" make-up and hair care case to take with me. (Those are all Project Runway buzz words, FYI, that those of us ~~obsessed with~~ inspired by the show throw around to sound like we're in the know.) I am Team Mondo all the way and have been dreaming about him and also want to be Tim Gunn when I grow up. Does that make me weird??? Don't answer that...

My glue gun has been fired up all week with feathers, ribbon, fabric and my sanity flying about the living room, but I can't show you anything yet. 'Cause some of the accessories are surprises for my lovely design friend who's flying across the country to visit for the party and also for the delightful hostess of the event. This fantastic soiree will be taking place on top of a mountain, and I. am. so. excited!!! Next week, I'll (hopefully) be back to normal and will share these creations as well as some cool projects I'm starting for Christmas!!! After searching several years for the right Advent Calendar, I finally found something that inspires me. Stop back by, dear friends, and I promise you will not be disappointed! The children and I visited the Denver Zoo for the first time, and I decided to "look for the art" vs. taking numerous photos of the kids squinting at the camera in front of every exhibit. I have scrapbooks full of those kinds of pics. There's nothing wrong with them, but my creative energies needed a different sort of expression.

Presenting "Animal Portraits:"

So very kind of these grizzly bears to give me

various angles and to hold the poses,

even in the midst of a back scratch.
Just like a super model. Amazing.

Loving the head angle, relaxed body language

and fierce expression.

Obviously not new at having his picture taken.

Displaying personality is such a key element

to a great portrait.
You really get a sense of who these creatures are with the way they present themselves.

And group photos aren't easy unless everyone cooperates, like this.

No prima flamingos here upstaging everyone else.

I spent quite a bit of time with these two fellows,

whose looks and personalities seem to be on opposite sides of the spectrum.

Both captured my heart and attention.
Their expressions draw me in and make me want to know more about them.

It was a gorgeous autumn day for a stroll through the zoo, and the animals wowed me with their

beautiful diversity.

Wednesday Whimsy: Mondo Inspired Outfit

Do you know who Mondo is?

He's a Denver based designer currently competing on Project Runway,

an amazingly creative and talented guy,

and also my favorite.

Next Thursday the Project Runway winner will be announced.

A dear friend is flying in from Maryland,

and we are going to a Finale Party

wearing outfits inspired by the show.

Mondo came up with this outfit for the Jackie O. challenge:

He's a genius with mixing patterns/prints

and designing what the judges keep referring to as clothes "full of joy."

Whimsical.

Bold.

Innovative.

Inspiring.

Here's how my Project Runway Finale Party outfit came together.

The purple tiered halter dress I've had for a few years,

but the houndstooth trousers were the find of the century.

One dollar at the thrift store, and a brand name too!

On clearance last Halloween,

these eyelashes have been waiting for the right occasion to make their debut.

They add the perfect whimsical touch, n'est-ce pas?

(I think that the L'Oreal Paris make-up artists on the show would totally approve.)

For more texture and contrast,

floral accessories and a zebra print scarf.

Zebra bag to tie in with the scarf,

Jackie O. style sunglasses,

and pointy shoes complete the look.

I may decide upon the other shoe for more height,

but here is the complete ensemble.

Am I runway-worthy in this outfit???

Fabric Rosette Variations

Fabric rosettes are very popular in the blogosphere, showing up on wreaths, as jewelry, on clothing, and the way I've purposed them the most: as hair accessories.

Basically, to make fabric rosettes:

1. Cut a strip of fabric (width and length depend on the size you want to make - the wider the fabric strip, the taller your flower will be and the longer your fabric strip is, the wider your flower will be).

2.Tie a knot at one end of your fabric strip.

3. Wind the fabric around the knot, gluing periodically (near the middle or bottom of the strip so that the glue is not visible from the top of the rosette).

4. You can leave the fabric strip straight and wrap it evenly (like the canvas one pictured above) or twist the fabric as you wrap it.

Another variation is to twist the fabric around and alternate gluing it loosely then more taut for a fuller, fluffier appearance, like the silver one on the right. I enjoy experimenting with all kinds of fabric scraps like burlap, canvas, rayon, polyester, both solid colors and prints. Though I've made numerous small ones, now I tie several lengths of fabric together to make a larger dramatic rosette. Compare the two pictures above - the pair on the left are a few inches in diameter, while the one on the right is much larger. The larger rosettes make great accessories - simply glue a pin back to it. Fabulous as a pop of color on a cardigan or even a hat!

Here are a few more samples of fabric rosettes that I've made...

A large pink one to adorn a headband, and small red polka dot ones to go on barrettes.

I had some fringey trim scraps and decided to use them up in a rosette. I started with the maroon loopy trim, gluing one end in a tight circle, then wrapping the rest of it around that circle. I added the black trim where the maroon one ended. Together, the colors and texture create a beautiful rose! I glued on a pin back so that this could be worn in many different ways. Didn't it turn out lovely?

Warning! I went a little crazy with this last one. I started off with a medium size red polka dot rosette but felt like it needed some pizzazz. I twisted and looped the green tulle around it to resemble leaves. But it didn't look finished. So I added lace trim remnant and some bling to the rosette (truth be told, there were a few spots that the glue had dried onto the top. The rhinestones look a bit bizarre in the photos but are much prettier in person!) After cutting out a felt circle and adhering this monstrosity to a stretchy headband, I gave it to my daughter who squealed with delight. My little fashionista will come up with the perfect outfit to wear this funky creation. The cool thing about this type of headpiece is that it can be worn several ways:
   1. High on the forehead like in these photos
   2. Lower on the forehead for a bohemian look
   3. Low in the back towards the bun
   4. Further back like a regular headband
   5. Around the neck, cinched in a little, as a choker

Thrifty Finds and Spray Paint

First, a small Autumn vignette.

Ever since a dear friend gave me a turquoise Pashmina shawl from Turkey,

I have been inspired by that color.

I'm thinking of making it my "go to" color for holidays,

rather than the traditional oranges of autumn

and the reds/greens of Christmas.

Last year, my white Christmas tree was transformed

with glittery turquoise ornaments.

I've had two of these wire cages for some time sitting on top of my bookcase.

One was a couple of dollars at a thrift store

while the other was snagged at my parents' house.

(Isn't it fun "shopping" in someone's garage?)

A can of turquoise spray paint on clearance at Michaels for $1.99

transforms both of them and a rustic birdcage.

On Monday, my favorite bargain palace ("The Unique Thrift Store") had a huge sale,

everything in the store was 50% off!

The kids and I hit the Halloween jackpot there (pictures and a post soon.)

My take-home treasures include this set of three for $1.91

that I am going to make into fun cloches.

Cha-ching!

A large birdcage also for $1.91!

I can't wait to cover it with some spray paint

after removing all of the artificial leaves.

I'm thinking white, since it's so large.

Pumpkins Galore

I've had pumpkins on the brain this weekend (not to be confused with having a pumpkin brain) and wanted to use up some fabric I've had for quite some time. Presenting...more pumpkin softies! I'd previously made some out of a baby blanket (check it out here), these are made out of pumpkin fabric scraps and an old wool sweater.

For the larger pumpkins, I traced around an embroidery hoop onto the fabric, while the smaller one is the size of a plate. Cut out the fabric circles, then use wide stitches (about 1/2 inch or so from the edge) around the entire circle. (The original instructions recommended dental floss since the thread can easily break when you start pulling on it. I doubled my thread, and it worked fine.) Gently pull on both ends of the thread, cinching the top of the pumpkin. I started stuffing my pumpkin before knotting the thread tightly around the stem (for these pumpkins I used polyester fill that I had on hand but you can use newspaper, fabric scraps, etc.)

Since I couldn't find the right size twigs for the larger pumpkin stems, I wrapped twine around glue sticks. First, tie a knot at the end, dab some glue on the middle of the glue stick cap and wrap the twine around the top and make your way around the glue stick. Periodically dab more glue to secure the twine as you wrap it around the glue stick. I only wrapped about half of the glue stick with the twine since it was going to be hidden inside of the pumpkin.

A recycled wool sweater is the perfect texture for a fabric pumpkin. Add a twig from outside, and voila! A colorful, fuzzy pumpkin!

There's nothing that I won't consider putting onto a headband or barrette! For the headband above, I wrapped a plain headband with the same pumpkin fabric scraps I used above for the pumpkin softies and glued a miniature pumpkin onto the headband. The one below is a recycled fabric headband with a miniature pumpkin glued onto it. The perfect seasonal accessory!!!

So I Went Red

The pictures in my last post were just for fun, representing possible changes in my blog...but I really liked the red, though I would never color my hair the same as Ronald McDonald. At least, I don't think I would. Too much maintenance.

I mentioned in a previous post about my mom and I sharing a fascination with Sophia Loren. And my mom spent the early seventies sporting an auburn hue. It was time for me to join the ranks and let out my own inner red. Though my hair is not as big as theirs. Too much maintenance.

Whaddya think???

By the way, check out my ski slope nose (below). I used to put a clothespin on it when I was little (like Amy from Little Women) hoping for a regal American nose. With nostrils that flared. Er, I digress. Back to the topic at hand...

Pay No Attention to the Woman Behind the Curtain...

Though I haven't posted anything new in the last week (yikes! and apologies), there has been a lot going on "behind the curtain."

School started last week - I homeschool our children and it takes a few weeks to get into the rhythm of things. This year I have a 4th grader, a 2nd grader and a "pay attention to me or I will destroy something" 2 year old. Our days have gotten very full and busy...but I'd have it no other way.

A few sewing projects have been started that I have been too tired to finish...but I am excited to share them once I do complete them! Soon.

My design accomplice on the East Coast has let me be a long-distance part of a project she's heading, which has been incredibly soothing to my poor, neglected creative soul. Boo hoo. Thank God for friends with artistic flair that keep me inspired and on my toes!

In the meantime, I have been watching a lot of foreign movies. So much Bollywood... (do you know about Bollywood??? I can't have the word culture in my title without mentioning it. It's a big part of the film industry of India, and many of the movies incorporate colorful musical numbers and dancing)...that I almost expect a breeze to blow my hair as I walk around in slow motion. Lol. Enough British dramas that I think empire waisted dresses are a wardrobe staple (ha!) And French films. Paris is calling me...it really is.

On my Ipod, I have been listening to a lot of Disco. Yup, you read it correctly. Disco. I actually like psychedelic polyester bellbottom pants (and own a few pairs). On my 40th birthday, I want a huge disco party and have been practicing "The Hustle." Thought you should know this about me. All this to say, there's a lot going on and the fruits of all of this "cultural inspiration" will be photographed and shared in upcoming posts.

Bright Eyes for Mature Eyes

There was a great comment on my "Bright Eyes" post about shimmery eyeshadows and whether they work for a more mature lady. I believe that make-up styles do need to be adjusted to make them more age appropriate, but everyone can enjoy the various looks. Why not???

One of my make-up inspirations for 50+ beauties is Helen Mirren:

Her eye make-up in this photo is bright, slightly shimmery, with dark lashes and eyeliner while her cheeks and lips are rosy. The overall look is similar to what I featured in the "Bright Eyes" post with the exception of the black eyeliner on both the top and bottom of the eyes. She is radiant and beautiful.

Some adjustment ideas for the "Bright Eyes" look for all of my va va va voom elder sisters:

Rather than using a shimmery eyeshadow all over the lid, I would try a light matte color and a gentle dab of shimmer on the middle of the eyelid, blending softly. By shimmery, I don't necessarily mean full-out glitter on the eyes either - there are eyeshadows with a tiny bit of sparkle in light colors like champagne that look amazing. And the amount of shimmer depends also on the occasion: major bling on the eyes for an evening out dancing, a subtle sparkle for an intimate dinner, or a light matte sweep and overall soft look for an afternoon event.

I like watching the movie "Monster-In-Law" just to see how fabulous Jane Fonda looks in it! Her make-up throughout the movie was impeccable, and she has had some great red carpet moments in recent years.

My mom allowed me to do her make-up (finally!) a few years ago, and these are the colors I used on her. My mom always used black liquid eyeliner and bright lipsticks - sometimes her look was quite severe. Peachy orange color on her eyes, cheeks and lips really softened up her face...and they are my "go to" colors for a fresh look. Jane Fonda looks gorgeous in them too!

At any age, I think it's important to vary your make-up according to what you like and feel good wearing, the occasion and season, and with knowledge of how to make it work for you. For example, testing a smoky eye before a big occasion and getting feedback from test photos as well as friends in the know. Or trying out various reds to find the one that looks best on you (I'm going to do a post on finding the right red lipstick in the near future.) I take a lot of test photos to see if new looks work on me - in fact, all of the pictures you see of me were taken by...ME!

Other ladies to consider for make-up inspirations are Diane Keaton (her campaign for L'Oreal is awesome!), Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, Iman, just to name a few. Please feel free to comment and/or ask questions!

Bright Eyes

It's been awhile since I've talked about make-up, though I enjoy experimenting with new looks all the time. Insomnia, stress, grief, hormonal fluctuations, etc. have taken a toll on my face in recent weeks, but I am delighted with the results of "the Bright Eye," which has been popular in commercials and on the red carpet recently.

I always start off with an all over dusting of a pale, neutral eye color as a base. For this look, lightly line the bottom of your eye (on the outside), along the base of your eyelashes with a white eyeliner. (In my experience, it is worth investing a few more dollars into a quality white eyeliner pencil. The cheap ones are thick and crumbly, while a good eyeliner goes on smoothly.) Blend it in gently - you don't want a clumpy or chalky, heavy line.

Tip: I avoid putting eyeliner on the insides of my eyelids to avoid irritation (tears and red eyes will ruin the look!) Eye pencils and make-up tools can harbor lots of bacteria, so it's better to be safe than infected. Besides, I think eyeliner on the inside of the lid makes eyes look smaller.

Next, I dipped my brush into shimmery white eyeshadow and tapped off the excess several times before sweeping it over my lids and over the eyeliner along the bottom of my eyes. With a blending brush, I lightly went over the areas around my eyes to smooth and soften the effect. Curled eyelashes, several coats of mascara, and black liquid eyeliner finished the eyes, and I chose a rose colored blush and lipstick for an overall softer look.

Here's a funny face for you, since make-up posts can tend to be all about the ooh-la-la outcome.

And see how well the "Bright Eye" holds up if the world suddenly goes black & white?!?

The "Bright Eye" is a versatile and fresh look...try it!

Tip: If you don't wear liquid eyeliner, you can line the top lid and/or apply a darker eyeshadow around the top base of your lashes.

What? September 1st doesn't kick off the beginning of autumn??? Well, it does to me! And I didn't even wait until today to pull out my autumn decor. I started pulling things out of boxes, ummm.....a few weeks ago. It's the Dollar Tree's fault. They had their ceramic pumpkins out, and my darling children decided I had to have the new colors, so they each bought me one. In order to not hurt their feelings, I (of course) had to set them out right away.

Happy sigh.

These white ceramic pumpkins were quite the hot commodity last year, and I grabbed some up fresh off of the Dollar Tree shelf. What they lack in cost, they make up for in character and cuteness and just the right touch for this season. So, I'm going to give one of these away to one of you!

There is just something about the shop pictured above that I just adore.

the Old Town has a coliseum built in the 2nd Century

as well as Roman gates and walls.

In the city center, there are many cute shops

featuring Bulgarian designers.

One lady I met through my host made me

a dress to wear at my wedding reception.

Dream with me for a moment,

that the shop in the picture is my own little boutique.

What would I feature?

Certainly, an eclectic assortment of vintage clothing,

one of a kind jewelry pieces made by artistic friends,

purses galore, and shoes.

Lots and lots of fun shoes.

These below are from my closet.

Never thought of myself as a "shoe girl"

but I tend to like interesting footwear.

At a steal.

These were purchased when I was on the hunt for black shoes

to wear to my Mom's memorial service.

I refused to get something safe and boring,

wanting to a) have shoes that I'd wear again

and b) remember my Mom and her great sense of fashion and style.

They're surprisingly comfortable. And were 1/3 the original price.

These shoes pay homage to my Mom's pointy-toed snakeskin heels

that started my fascination with funky fashion in the first place.

Tragic was the day my ten year old feet grew out of them.

But the vibrant orange soothes my wounded memory.

A delicate shoe for spring and summer,

acquired in the best way possible -

never worn and given to me!

Pointy-toes with a slight heel,

just waiting for an invitation to a garden party.

Having a daughter who enjoys experimenting with various fashions and puts up with my whimsical creations is a delight! I've made many types of floral headbands and barrettes for her but was bored with the same-old, same-old.

Then I saw them. Bugs at the Dollar Store. And a new idea was born.

She wore the bumble bee with a yellow gingham dress, and it was darling! And I adore the cheery green of the grasshopper.

Many of the floral accessories were featured here previously, except these two...

Little girls are precious, aren't they? And truly a gift!

From My Mother...

One of my favorite pictures of my mother.

Pondering the very different relationships each of us kids had with her.

When I was ten, I was fascinated by two pairs of my mother's shoes.

Pointy-toed high heels made out of snakeskin.

I loved parading around the hallway, lost on an imaginary runway.

So stylish and cool.

My mother and I shared a love of fashion.

She gave me all of her custom made outfits from the late 60s and 70s,

like the suit in the picture above.

She also taught me about jewelry,

the qualities of various stones and the importance of real gold.

When I got ears my pierced, she bought me 18K gold earrings.

And she let me wear her star-sapphire earrings to school sometimes.

Birthday gifts usually included a beautiful new piece of jewelry,

a ring with my birthstone, necklaces, brooches.

A gorgeous watch.

Other things my mother bestowed to me...

A love of big hair and big sunglasses.

An admiration of Sophia Loren.

(we swore we'd follow her glamizon example into old age),

Her dramatic flair - she was a professional dancer,

studying traditional dance from the age of three.

(I've had my time on stage and have been in a few films and commercials.)
Black liquid eyeliner skills.
(when I was 16 and officially allowed to wear make-up,
she gave me a kit and taught me how to properly apply everything.
She used to give me a new make-up kit every Christmas.)

Ability to Organize and Schedule.

Creativity.

A strong voice and sensitive heart.

Compassion for those less fortunate.

Did I mention a short temper???

Saying Goodbye...

On July 16th, my mother went home to be with the Lord. I was grateful to have been able to be with my family and to visit her for the two weeks prior to her passing. Though she was pretty much in a coma during that time, she did open her eyes and squeeze my hands tightly one morning. That was the most movement she showed.

We had a Memorial Service for her a week later on July 23rd. Though I'd like to share more about that at a later time, this is where I said my goodbyes to my mother.

One of my favorite memories is the afternoon I spent with my mother and my children here by the Lafayette River. We sat under the shade of trees with a Japanese picnic lunch, enjoying the lovely view and cool breezes. We must have been there for several hours. It was a perfect day.

I took the red eye and flew aross the country in the middle of the night last week to be with my mom who is critically ill. The waiting and praying continue as we visit her daily and wait for her to open her eyes. Mercifully, my sister asked me to do some projects, creating lots of barrettes for a friend goin on a trip to South Africa.

Forty-five barrettes later, I continue to keep my glue gun loaded and ready for the next round of ribbons, fabric and glue. The quiet evenings pass quicker when I am creating. I hope to express and process my sorrow and grief with creativity, making something new out of something in a more raw state. More posts and some pictures soon.

Inspired by Yellow

Some friends and I went to see "Knight and Day" last week,and one of my pals couldn't stop gushing about the yellow dress Cameron Diaz wore in the film. She wanted to run right out and shop for the perfect yellow dress.

I have never owned a yellow dress. Ever. Come to think of it, a yellow anything. 'Cause I'm half Japanese, and yellow is not flattering if you have an underlying yellowish tint to your skin. But if I could wear yellow, here's a sampling of what I'd choose...

Vintage-inspired dresses are fabulous. I could see wearing this with heels, flats, a cardigan on a cooler day, and with slacks underneath (one of my favorite ways to wear a shorter dress!)

A romantic dress in pale yellow, so dreamy! I changed into a dress similar to this for my wedding reception. A Bulgarian fashion designer and I collaborated on the dress, and she whipped it together right before my return to the States! It was light and airy, just perfect for the amount of dancing we had planned for our reception.

Smocked, empire waisted dresses are practically a staple in my wardrobe! This shorter length with the layers of fabric is a must have for sure. This dress may convert me to wearing yellow, even if I have to endure a spray tan or do whatever to look great in it!

A Celebration of Certain Blues

It's probably quite obvious, with the new background and header on my blog,

that I am obsessed with the lighter, whimsical yet rich shades of blue.

Teal, Turquoise, Robin's Egg Blue...

I am quite the admirer of the pops of color and visual interest

these color variations add.

After lamenting the fact that I wasn't connecting with the thrift stores in my town,

I came across a store called "The Unique Thrift Store" about 20 minutes away.

Whoo Hoo! And they've got a ton of treasures,

like this marvelous candlestick.

These birds, originally dark brown, were found in the Dollar Store

and spruced up with Robin's Egg Blue craft paint.

Though Easter was months ago, I still have some eggs out and about.

Inexpensive plastic eggs are great to experiment with...

And finally, my favorite ring and earrings.

The ring was my grandmother's,

and the earrings were purchased in Maine.

Wire Cage Revamp and Hair Accessories

Totally inspired by the whimsical decor (especially the centerpieces made of tomato cages) by MayDae, I gathered up twine, burlap, potpourri, old candleholders and a wire cage found on clearance to make my version.

First, I wrapped a glass candleholder with black jute twine and used it to elevate the wider brown candleholder inside the cage. After a layer of dried moss, I filled in the base of the candlesticks with potpourri. The wire cage is finished off with twine wrapped the long way around it, two burlap flowers and a ribbon at the top.

I made massive amount of flowers with whatever fabric scraps I had -

More of the dried moss and potpourri fill this apothecary jar.

And I repurposed my favorite wooden pears yet again by using them in place of candles on this rustic 75% off clearance piece from Target. The twine was already wrapped around it and fits in perfectly with everything else!

More of the black jute twine around the top of a lamp shade...

and around the base along with fabric rosettes made from an old wool sweater.

Finally, a bunch of hair accessories I made from fabric rosettes and faux flowers attached to headbands and barrettes. My toddler, who insists on playing with anything I'm working on, helped me out by modeling some of the accessories. Shh, don't tell his dad I took pictures of him wearing all of this girlie stuff!

Lovely Petal Purses

In a recent post, I shared several different styles of purses I've made by adding flower petals or ribbon trim to Dollar Store Purses. I have two more Glammed Up Dollar Store Purses I'd like to feature today.

This is what the purse started off looking like, right out of the store. The fabric flower didn't have a strong adhesive, so it was easy just to pull off. I used both this pink purse and a gray version of it for these makeovers.

These flower petals were from the Dollar Spot at Target, and I used an assorted box of petals for the 2nd purse that I purchased from Michaels.

Starting at the sides, I hot glued overlapping petals starting from the bottom (about 4 rows). Then starting from the bottom again, I glued rows of slightly overlapping petals across the front. Once the entire front was covered, I flipped the bag over and covered the back.

With some lace trim I had on hand, I wrapped the top edge all around the purse and glued a pink ribbon as a finishing touch. My final step was adding pink rhinestones to the petals. The pictures don't quite capture the sparkle and pizzazz the rhinestones add.

For this bag, I used a mixed box of brown, pale pink and shimmery see through petals. Starting at the sides, I layered a pattern of overlapping petals from bottom to top. Then I went across the front side (bottom to top), layering a pattern of petals before doing the same to the back.

I glued a band of white ribbon across the top and made a flower accessory with leftover brown petals. The center of this flower is a vintage button with a pink rhinestone.

I added two of the same vintage buttons to dress up the back, then added pink rhinestones to all of the pink petals.

Voila! Two more purses to add to my daughter's collection of Glammed Up Dollar Store Purses! Please check out the ones I made previously here.

Glammed Up Dollar Store Purses

Back in January, I featured my Petal Purse Adorned with a Vintage Brooch. Obsessed, er, inspired to create some more, I came up with two variations to the original design. The magenta bag, minus the black trim, brooch, and white lace, gives you an idea what the purses looked like prior to being dressed up.

With my trusty glue gun, I secured the black trim under the denim band and added a costume jewelry brooch.

The finishing touch was adding the white lace trim as an underskirt. Happy sigh! I love the combination of the bright, bold colors with the delicate lace.

For this whimsical purse, I used a gauzy trim with a beaded edge.

Starting at the bottom, I wrapped the bag with rows of the trim and added the black finishing trim across the denim band.

All of the trim and lace were purchased as clearance remnants, usually for no more than a dollar an assorted bag.

They didn't have the same kind of bag I used before, but I found this one at the Dollar Tree. It came with a glued on fabric flower, but the adhesive wasn't on very well. I may borrow their idea and glue more fabric flowers all over the bag or use these pink flower petals from Target's Dollar Spot.

Woo Hoo! Wednesday: Hat Cookies

Inspired by this post for Easter Bonnet cookies by Bakerella, I made my version for a Women's Clothing and Purse Exchange at my church. I am well aware that mine don't look a lot like the original... I have come to a place of acceptance and peace that the projects I undertake don't often look as good as the original. I have a tendency to do too much versus not enough, restraint and minimalism not being a part of my make up. And I am okay with this realization!

For my Hat Cookies, I used a recipe for Sugar Cookies by Martha Stewart. Knowing that the cookies would be extra sweet with all of the frosting, I used 1/4 cup sugar instead of the 1 cup in the recipe. Each hat is made from two cookies - a thinner, larger one for the base and a smaller, thicker one for the top, so I doubled the recipe also. To cut out the two circles, I used a plastic piece from the top of our Vitamix for the smaller one and a Japanese tea cup for the larger one. They were what I found in my kitchen that had the right proportions for the hats.

The glaze for the cookies is a Powdered Sugar Icing (minus the corn syrup, since I didn't have any.) The funky chartreuse color came from a box of Neon Food Coloring. I was trying for a fashionable green... After drizzling the glaze over each hat cookie, I placed them on a cookie tray and stuck them in the freezer to set.

The decor on the hats comes from a jar of vanilla frosting and sprinkles to accessorize. White for the hat band along with pink and purple flowers (also colors from the box of Neon food dyes.) My apologies for the smooshed white circles on top of the hats - I forgot to take pictures until after I removed the foil for transport in the rain. I can't wait to try this again, maybe a square cookie on the bottom for a graduation party. The cookies were quite yummy! And that counts just as much as their cuteness.
